  1. I consider myself to be an ‘enthusiast’ when it comes to cooking. Having said that I do lack ‘common sense’ when it comes to following cooking recipes. Most recipes that I have read leave me with an impression that the chef wanted to gloat over his/her preparation and that’s the sole reason why s/he chose to publish it. Here’s why –

The recipes do not specify who is the ‘intended audience’ for the recipe. For some people you can say ‘add salt’, for some you have to say ‘add 2 teaspoons of salt’ and for some you have to specify what’s a teaspoon. I am an engineer and no prizes for guessing what category I fall into.

Same goes for the phrase, ‘when the oil is hot’, this phrase by itself leaves an engineer very very non-plussed. I know what kind of sound the chips should make when they are being fried except I had to experiment with the ‘how high should the flame be’, for ‘how long should I keep the oil on the flame before I drop the chips in’, ‘how do I know that the oil has attained the right temperature’, etc etc.

By the way, I am a sucker for anything that is made of brinjals.
PS: After much experimentation, I have got the hang of ‘bhindi masala’. Yay!

  2. So the other day my mom and I were wondering about this. I’m going to pass this post along, facebooking it now. Thank you for the delicious post and the happy coincidence.
