Sympathetic Losses & The Empathy Monster
I think people are afraid to listen because they are afraid they might hear their own stories. Sympathy is terrifying, empathy a death knell. Being sympathetic? Whew.
I think we are afraid of poetry because it makes us confront the lies we tell and how we pretend they’re beautiful.
I think there is courage in holding onto our denials. And there’s a demented wisdom in letting them dance in front of our eyes for entertainment.
I think we are afraid of what we want. I think we are hungry to want more bravely. I think we are a little grateful to each person that makes us bleed or cry – for fishing out our mortality.
And eventually, I think we are most scared of the knowledge that we chose our losses.
