At least it used to. Before the anti-outsider sentiments, the religious fundamentalists and the terrorists made their presence felt. I wonder if the gate opens only to the West and shuts out all those who come from the other directions. The Island seems to be detaching itself from the mainland. But the Gateway at night makes you momentarily forget all of that.
